Welcome to The Jolene Edit
Welcome to The Jolene Edit
If you've ever left one of my appointments with pages of notes, a list of product recommendations, or a better understanding of your hair than you've had in years, you already know one thing about me: I love to educate!
Helping women understand their hair is just as important to me as creating beautiful results behind the chair. That's exactly why I created The Jolene Edit.
This blog is where the conversations we start in the salon continue after your appointment ends. Whether you're chasing healthier curls, cleaner more natural hair color, or answers to questions you've had for years, you'll find practical, science-backed education you can actually use.

Why I Started This Blog
After nearly two decades behind the chair, I've learned something important, beautiful hair isn't created in a single appointment. It's created in the weeks between appointments, through the products you choose, the techniques you practice at home, and the small everyday decisions that either support your hair or quietly sabotage it.
As a curly hair specialist in Grand Rapids, I answer a lot of the same questions every week:
Why do my curls behave differently every wash day?
What is hair porosity, and why does it matter so much?
Why does my hair look great day one and awful day two?
Why won't my gray coverage last?
How do I stop the frizz?
There's rarely enough time during an appointment to fully unpack the science and technique behind every one of these answers. This blog gives me the room to actually do that.
What You'll Learn Here
If you're looking for another list of "5 Hair Hacks" recycled from social media, this probably isn't the place. Instead, you'll find honest, educational content built to help you make informed decisions about your hair, not just follow trends.
Here's what you can expect to see:
Curly hair education - products, porosity, moisture-protein balance, styling techniques, and how to get more consistent curl results wash after wash.
Hair porosity deep dives - why the same product can behave completely differently on two different heads, and how to choose what's actually right for yours!
Clean hair color education - ingredient transparency, gray coverage, blonding, and why healthier color starts long before you sit in my chair.
A clean color philosophy - because I believe beautiful color should support your hair's long-term health, not just its next six weeks.
Hair, scalp, and wellness – because what’s happening with your stress, your hormones, your nutrition, and your overall health tend to show up in your hair before they show up anywhere else.
Some posts will be quick reads for your morning coffee. Others will be deeper dives into the "why" behind what I'm doing behind the chair. Either way, the goal is the same, help you feel confident caring for your hair between appointments.
A Place to Keep Learning
Education has always been one of the most rewarding parts of my life and career. Whether you're already a guest of mine or you're searching for a natural haircolor specialist or curly hair expert in the Grand Rapids area, I hope this becomes a resource you come back to again and again.
If something you read here raises a question, or you want me to cover a topic I haven't gotten to yet, tell me! Drop a comment, send a DM, or bring it up at your next appointment. Some of the best posts start with a question a guest asked me while I was sectioning her hair.
